Extract from Lancaster Gazette 21st September 1872:

Extraordinary Price of a Duchess Bull.— At a sale of Jno. Harwood, Esq., of Winterfold, near Kidderminster, on Wednesday, the 18th inst., a four-year- old bull, called Eighth Duke of Geneva, a pure Duchess bull, sold for the extraordinary price of "1,650 guineas," under the auspices of Mr. Strafford. Sixty-four lots were disposed of comprising bulls, cows, heifers, and calves, the lot averaging nearly 250 guineas each. This shows the estimation in which the Bates' blood is held. The purchaser of the Eighth Duke of Geneva was Mr. Leney, of Wateringbury, Kent.

Adjusting 1650 guineas or £1,732 by RPI from 1872 to 2010 gives a value of over £120, 000. But there are many other ways of seeing this which give higher values and are explained at http://www.measuringworth.com/.
