Extract from Westmorland Gazette - Saturday 08 June 1861

With regard the fruit, a correspondent at Wateringbury says:— There will be a short crop of gooseberries this year; and a shorter one of black currants, of which, indeed, there will be less than for some years past. Of red and white currants, however, there will be an abundant supply. Of filberts there will be a slight, and of cob-nuts a fair crop. Of the backward sorts of cherries there the prospect of an average, and apples are looking exceedingly well where there is bloom.
