MAIDSTONE COUNTY COURT.

A sitting of this Court was held at the Sessions House, Maidstone, on Tuesday, before His Honour Judge Parry.

BREWERS AND LICENSEE. In an action brought by Messrs. Jude, Hanbury and Co., brewers, Wateringbury, against George Harvey, Star Cottage, West Malling, to recover £12 14s-1d, Mr. H. J. Bracher, who appeared for plaintiffs, said defendant admitted £11 10s-9d, and he proposed accepting that sum and abandoning the remainder. On a counter-claim for £19 10s-6d, he admitted £3 0s.6d, and contested £l4 for the keep of a horse, and £2 10s- paid for assistance during hop-picking. Explaining the counter-claim, Mr. Harvey said at plaintiffs' request he undertook the management of the Telegraph Inn, Wateringbury, with the jobmaster’s business. Finding it did not pay, he communicated with the firm. The horse was provided by plaintiffs, but as it was deformed people would not hire it. He (defendant) purchased fodder for it, and for this he claimed, as well as for the money he paid in obtaining help during the hop-picking season. His Honour: the help during hop-picking does not mean you helped to pick hops, but someone helped you to give the long pull or the short pull? (laughter).—Yes. And these men wanted refreshments

while they were pulling the handle? (laughter). In cross-examination, defendant admitted that whatever money was derived from the jobmaster's business he retained. Having perused the agreement under which defendant took the house, His Honour characterised the counter-claim as a waste of time, and dismissed it.
