BOYS' CRICKET CLUB.

A Match between " Our Boys " and Nettlestead was played in Mr. H. White's Meadow on Wednesday, June 13th, when the home team proved victorious. This was chiefly owing to the fine batting of Ernest Hubble (24) and Thomas Jeffrey (18) and the bowling of Ernest Phillips (Captain) and Thomas Rose. For Nettlestead the batting of W. Cronk (19) and the bowling of Henry Hutson were highly commendable.

Ernest Hubble was 11 years old and was the eldest of 6 brothers (he has an elder sister), one of whom, the youngest then aged 2 years, was John (or Jack) Hubble who went on to be a first class Kent cricketer- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Hubble and founder of Hubble and Freeman, a sports shop.

For details of the Hubble family see Census 1881

The next month's magazine reported as follows:

The Return Match against the Nettlestead Boys' Club was played on Wednesday, July 18th, when the Nettlestead Boys were victorious on the first innings by 8 runs.

A match was played against eleven members of the St. Peter's, Rochester, Young Men's Friendly Society on Saturday, July the 21st, when " Our Boys" doubled the score of their opponents with the loss of only six wickets.

Extract from September 1883 Parish magazine:

A match was played on Bank Holiday between 11 Married and 11 Single Villagers. The veterans were ahead on the first innings, but the youthfulness of their opponents enabled them to last longer and thus to win the match in spite of the " science " displayed throughout by the Married Eleven.

"Our Boys" have played two Matches, one against East Farleigh and one against Aylesford, former ended in a tie, the latter in a defeat by three runs. At the conclusion of the Match at Aylesford, the Boys were hospitably entertained at Tea by the Rev. J. H. Browne.
