The Kentish Gazette of 11th June 1859 reported on two cases at the West Kent Quarter Sessions in both of which J.B. Jude was defrauded each time of 4 1/2 gallons of beer:

John Hammond, labourer, pleaded guilty to obtaining by false pretences, at Wateringbury, on the 14th of June, 4 1/2gallons of mild beer, with intent to defraud Mr. J. B. Judge [Jude?]. —Twelve months' hard labour.

Reuben Coulter, labourer, was charged with having, at Wateringbury, on the 27th of September, obtained, by means of false pretences, 4 1/2 gallons of beer, with intent to defraud Mr. J. B. Judge [Jude?].—The prisoner had been three times convicted of felony, and nine times in prison, and he was now sentenced to three years' penal servitude.

Jude seems to have been rather unlucky at this time perhaps reflecting his illness-see also Embezzlement at Jude the brewers (1859)
