One day St.James Hotel in Monreal, Canada, caught fire.

A young woman worked in the hotel. Her name was Johanna. She worked at the kitchen in the morning and afternoon and lived in the staff rooms on the fifth floor.

Unfortunately, it was the fifth floor that the fire started on that night.

Johanna was woken up by cries 'Fire! Fire!'. She tried to leave the room but the hall was filled up with a black smoke.

She dashed to the window and yelled for help.

Firefighters'd already arrived. They were trying to control the fire. They noticed a person in the fifth floor window and leaned the longest ladder they had against the wall, trying to rescue Johanna.

Unluckily, the ladder wasn't long enough to reach the fifth floor.

At that moment the fire spread to Johanna's room, her bed was on fire.

It was just a couple of minutes from the inevitable death of Johanna when one of the firefighters had an idea.

He took a short ladder and climbed up the long ladder. Then he turned over, leaned against the wall and raised the short ladder as high as he could, so the upper end of the short ladder reached Johanna's window on the fifth floor.

Johanna understood that her life was in the firefighter's hands. She plucked up her courage and started to go down.

It took her 5 minutes to be safe and sound on the ground.

So, that's a way Johanna was rescued, thanks to a smart and strong firefighter.

Orig

Fire! Fire!

It is 1873. The St.James Hotel in Montreal, Canada, is on fire.

Johanna O'Connor, 20 years old, works at the hotel. During the day, she works in the kitchen. At night, she sleeps in her room on the fifth floor.

Johanna is sleeping in her room when she hears people yelling, 'Fire! Fire!'. She runs to the door and opens it.

She sees only black smoke. She closes the door, quickly gets dressed, and runs to the window.

'Help! Help!' she yells from the window.

Firefighters are on the street below. They see Johanna at the window. They put a ladder against the building.

It is a long ladder - it reaches to the fourth floor. The ladder doesn't reach her.

Now the fire is in Johanna's room. Her bed is on fire!

'Help! Help!' she yells again.

'What can we do?' the firefighters ask one another. 'We don't have a longer ladder.'

'I have an idea', one firefighter says.

He gets a short laddder. He climbs up the long ladder with the short ladder in his hand.

He stands at the top of the long ladder, turns around, and presses his back against the building. He holds the short ladder above him.

'Come on, Miss, climb down the ladder,' he says to Johanna.

'I can't' Johanna says.

'Yes, you can,' the firefighter says. 'Just take your time and come down slowly.'

Slowly, Johanna climbs down the short ladder to the long ladder. A few minutes later, she is on the ground.

Johanna is safe, thanks to a smart and strong firefighter.
