The Council is planning to honour a local hero connected with our area. The local hero can be someone well known or an ordinary citizen. He/She could be still living or could be someone from history.

Residents are invited to send in proposals identifying a deserving person, giving reasons for their choice and suggesting a suitable way in which this hero should be honoured.

220-260 words.

1.

Responding to your invitation, I would like to suggest a hero who was born, lived and acted in The City of Yekaterinburg. He is an urban legend in its literal meaning and known as the Old Man Bukashkin while his real name was Evgeny Mikhailovich Malakhin (1938-2005).

Evgeny Mikhailovich was an artist and poet, who was especially famous of his folk-pank skomorokh street performances. What is more, he was also a photographer, musician, hand-made book creator and the first local graffiti artist who started a folk campaign with the slogan "Let's colour waste containers!". His street paintings were designed in quite simplistic manner. He usually added a meaningfully connected short poem to his picture. So, I suppose, his masterpieces might be interpreted as creolized texts which were relevant and timely.

I suppose that the Old Man Bukashkin is eligible to be honoured due to his non-conformity with the Soviet Union dull routine life. True it is, he was a dissident but he did not actually criticize the communist regime. I can call him a moral and ethical escapist and, presumably, he was a free man. I believe that it is a smell of freedom that is necessary to be brought into Russian culture. The Old Man could be a symbol of this freedom of mind.

If my choice is accepted, I suggest setting up a fund which could be used to organize an annual street art competition. The Сouncil should allow participants to paint on some concrete fences and blank walls of some city buildings. So, the paintings could remain there till the next contest. The prize could be known as the Old Man Bukashkin Award. Thus, people could commemorate the great person and simultaneously make the city brighter. I am looking forward to your positive decision about my candidate for being honoured.
