Foreign languages learning in Russia

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to outline who is interested in learning foreign languages, what particular languages and where they prefer to learn, and to recommend a way of enhancing language learning in this country.

Russians and foreign languages

Nowadays most Russians are convinced of the need to study foreign languages due to being considered as the basis of a successful career.

Thus, they are students and pupils, or at least their parents, who are vastly interested in learning languages for the purpose of studying at a prestigious local university or a foreign one.

Besides, IT-people are reckoned as eager language learners since their professions are highly demanded in the world and speaking a foreign language could help them to find a well-paid job abroad.

Among the career advantages to knowing foreign languages, it is noted the ability to communicate with foreigners, the convenience of travelling abroad, the ability to read books and films in their original language, consequently many other Russians are learning foreign languages all over the country.

Language choice

According to statistics, approximately 80 percent of local people consider English as the most important foreign language to learn.

English is followed by German, Chinese, and French while the other foreign languages are not so popular.

It is so because of the career and studying reasons that have been mentioned earlier.

Moreover, in Russia, English is believed to be a lingua franca of the modern world.

Learning facilities

It is claimed that most learners prefer to take lessons at language schools.

Many people learn from private coaches and, recently, the lessons often are provided through Skype.

Besides, some people try to use online courses at distance education sites like LingvoLeo and Coursera.

Recommendations

I would suggest that the government should change the programme of learning foreign languages at school.

They should provide learning at least two foreign languages starting at the first year of education with methods which is appropriate for the age of pupils.

What is more, it would be a good idea to prepare pupils for the international examinations and give them an opportunity to take them at the schools.

This would have the result of improving language learning in this country.
