a useful nugget of information

A gold bar, also called gold bullion or a gold ingot, is a quantity of refined metallic gold of any shape that is made by a bar producer meeting standard conditions of manufacture, labeling, and record keeping.

What's the difference between bar, bullion, and ingot?

"Bullion" is a general term commonly used when referring to precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) accounted in units of mass like troy ounces or grams. (the definition of bullion) Bullion can come in many forms such as coinage, bars, ingots, rounds, and the like.

"Ingot" is more of a description given to the shape of a piece of cast metal.

It can refer to non-precious metals as well as bullion and usually has the shape of its original cast.

"Bar" can actually be a specific technical term when referring to a standard Good Delivery bar. A Good Delivery bar is 400 troy oz with 0.995 purity, etc. (Gold bar, Good Delivery)

Commonly a "bar" just refers to a shape of a bullion product which has its mass (weight) and purity marked on the material.

the second opinion

    1. Bullion can come in any shape form or metal. It could be gold bullion, silver bullion, palladium bullion, etc. and can come in any form (gold coins, gold bars or even gold bullion cubes).

    2. Small gold bars like Swiss bars for example are good for retail buying while big gold bars are good for institutional investors or wealthy individuals. Keep in mind that some of these small bars carry sometimes a huge premium, it might be a good idea to focus on the bullion content instead. As long as it is .99 purity you are investing directly in the metal.

    3. Ingot is the mass metal you take out of a cast case after after the melting process so you can further process and certified.
