1. the first draft

The Most Hilarious Guide Book

"Three Men in a Boat" is a humorous masterpiece of Jerome K. Jerome who initially intended to write a serious travel guide with an academic introduction to the local history along the route. However, the funny elements took over the author's sober point, as a result we rather have a comic novel which tells us about a two-week boating holiday of three Englishmen and their dog on the Thames. The book consists of a substantial number of chapters which describes the journey connecting with the attractions along the river and the incidents that inevitably occur.

I am personally very keen on The Great Britain's history and literature especially the the Victorian ones. So, I was fascinated by a bright and lively descriptions of Englishmen everyday life which are written in so classic English and in such a jolly style. The book includes famous comedy pieces, such as the story of two drunken men who try to get into the same bed in the dark, Irish stew episode, Uncle Podger's chaotic activity about hanging a picture and many others. I was also caught up by an impresive and precise depicting of the Thames surroundings along the characters' way. When I have finished reading I even wondered if I can have a similar trip in the future.

I would suggest reading this narrative particulary to people who like playful and, simultaniously, informative stories. One of the most amazing things about "Three Men in a Boat" is that the jokes keep being fresh and witty today. What is more, you can have a look at how Englishmen are considering and describing themselves. If you enjoy books about the Victorian people, you will really love this one with its wonderful dialogues and sketches. Do not forget that this novel was written in an excellent English. So if you are learning English, you cannot miss the opportunity to read this treasure and improve your vocabulary and grammar smiling and laughing at the same time.
