Stellaria media / Vogelmuur e.a.

Pharmacognostical and quality control parameters of Stellaria media Linn. Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease. Neerja Rani, Neeru Vasudeva *,Surendra Kumar Sharma, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, Haryana 125001, India

Stellaria media Linn. (Caryophylaceae) commonly known as Chickweed, is found throughout the Himalayas upto an altitude of 4300 m [1]. The plant is indicated as antiinflammatory, antipyretic, diuretic, emollient, emmenagogue and digestive in varioustraditionalsystems of medicines[2].

A poultice of plant can be applied to cuts, burns and bruises [3-4]. Stellaria media is reported to have antibacterial [5], anti-hepatoma [6], anti-oxidant [7], and anti-obesity effects [8-9].

Various phytoconstituents viz. lipids [10], pentasaccharide [11], and triterpenoid [12] have been reported from this plant. In spite of abundant uses, the pharmacopeial standards of Stellaria media is not been explored. In the present study pharmacognostic parameters of plant such as morphological and microscopical characters, physical standardslike loss on drying, ash values, extractives values, foreign organic matter, crude fiber content, haemolytic

activity, preliminary organic analysis, elemental analysis, microbial contamination and HPTLC profile of powdered drug was undertaken to standardize the plant of Stellaria media according to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines[13].

The quality control of crude drugs and herbal formulations is of paramount importance in justifying their acceptability in modern system of medicine. But one of the major problems faced by the herbal drug industry is non availability of rigid quality control profile for herbal material and their formulations. The microscopic characters, leaf constants, quantitative analysis, and physicochemical parameters studied here can be used for judging the adulteration and purity of this drug. Since these parameters studied are constant and any change in these values are indicative of substitution and adulteration with the plant Stellaria media.

The preliminary phytochemical analysisrevealed the presence of carbohydrates, saponins, glycosides, phenols, tannins, phytosterols and flavonoids. These constituents may be possibly responsible for the biological activities of Stellaria media. HPTLC profile helpsin standardization and also for undertaking work on isolating and identifying the bioactive compounds.

As there is no detailed pharmacognostic anatomical work on Stellaria media Linn. isreported. Therefore present work is taken up in the view to completely standardize the herb in accordance to parameters of WHO Guidelines.

James Duke about chickweed

Young leaves - raw or cooked as a potherb[2, 7, 9, 12, 52, 54, 183]. They can be available all year round if the winter is not too severe[85]. Very nutritious, they can be added to salads whilst the cooked leaves can scarcely be distinguished from spring spinach[4, K]. The leaves contain saponins so some caution is advised, see the note on toxicity at the top of the page. A nutritional analysis is available[218]. Seed - ground into a powder and used in making bread or to thicken soups[172, 183]. It would be very fiddly to harvest any quantity of this seed since it is produced in small quantities throughout most of the year and is very small[K]. The seed contains 17.8% protein and 5.9% fat[218].

Chickweed has a very long history of herbal use, being particularly beneficial in the external treatment of any kind of itching skin condition[238]. It has been known to soothe severe itchiness even where all other remedies have failed[254]. In excess doses chickweed can cause diarrhoea and vomiting[254]. It should not be used medicinally by pregnant women[254]. The whole plant is astringent, carminative, demulcent, diuretic, expectorant, laxative, refrigerant, vulnerary[4, 7, 9, 21, 54, 165, 222]. Taken internally it is useful in the treatment of chest complaints and in small quantities it also aids digestion[254]. It can be applied as a poultice and will relieve any kind of roseola and is effective wherever there are fragile superficial veins[7]. An infusion of the fresh or dried herb can be added to the bath water and its emollient property will help to reduce inflammation - in rheumatic joints for example - and encourage tissue repair[254]. Chickweed is best harvested between May and July, it can be used fresh or be dried and stored for later use[4, 238]. A decoction of the whole plant is taken internally as a post-partum depurative, emmenagogue, galactogogue and circulatory tonic[218]. It is also believed to relieve constipation and be beneficial in the treatment of kidney complaints (Phillips). The decoction is also used externally to treat rheumatic pains, wounds and ulcers[4, 218, 222]. The expressed juice of the plant has been used as an eyewash (Phillips).

Volgens Natural Standard

Common chickweed (Stellaria media) is a wild plant that has traditionally been collected for human consumption in southeast Spain. There is also evidence of ethnobotanical use of Stellaria holostea in the Acquapendente district of Italy, in Canada and in Scotland. There is minimal scientific data available on the medicinal uses of chickweed and related Stellaria species. The current evidence is limited to in vitro study on its antibacterial properties and in vitro study on its anti-hepatoma properties . Chickweed appears to cause contact dermatitis in approximately 2% of the population .

Herbal textbooks recommend chickweed (poultice, ointment, or oil) as a topical remedy for skin conditions including cuts, wounds, itching, irritation, psoriasis, and eczema. Currently, there is a lack of high quality scientific evidence supporting the use of chickweed for any medical condition.

SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

These uses have been tested in humans or animals. Safety and effectiveness have not always been proven. Some of these conditions are potentially serious, and should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider.

Verwante soorten Hoornbloem / Cerastium

Akkerhoornbloem, Engelse field chickweed, field mouse ear, Duits Acker-Hornkraut, Huhnerdarm of Herzgras.

Culpeper 1653 about chickweed

It is a fine soft pleasing herb under the dominion of the Moon. The herb bruised or the juice applied with cloths or sponges dipped therin to the region of the liver, and as they dry to have it fresh applied, doth wonderfully temperate the heat of the liver.

Nicholas Culpeper, 1653

Gerard about chickweed

'It is found to be as effectual as Purslain to all the purposes whereunto it serveth, except for meat only. The herb bruised, or the juice applied, with cloths or sponges dipped therein to the region of the liver, and as they dry to have fresh applied, doth wonderfully temper the heat of the liver and is effectual for all impostumes and swellings whatsoever; for all redness in the face, wheals, pushes, itch or scabs, the juice being either simply used, or boiled in hog's grease; the juice or distilled water is of good use for all heat and redness in the eyes ... as also into the ears.... It helpeth the sinews when they are shrunk by cramps or otherwise, and extends and makes them pliable again, by using the following methods, viz.: Boil a handful of Chickweed and a handful of dried red-rose leaves, but not distilled, in a quart of muscadine, until a fourth part be consumed; then put to them a pint of oil of trotters, or sheep's feet, let them boil a good while, still stirring them well, which being strained, anoint the grieved part therewith warm against the fire, rubbing it well with your hand, and bind also some of the herb, if you choose, to the place, and with God's blessing it will help in three times dressing.'

Phytochemical and Pharmacological Potential of Genus Stellaria: A Revie. Sharma, Anupam; Arora, Disha

PUB. DATEJuly 2012 Journal of Pharmacy Research;2012, Vol. 5 Issue 7, p3591

The review includes 68 references on the genus Stellaria, and comprises ethnopharmacology, morphology, phytoconstituents, pharmacological reports and toxicology of the prominent species of Stellaria. Flavonoids, triterpenoid glycosides and phenolic acids constitute major classes of phytoconstituents of the genus. A few species of this genus have medicinal value. Among these, S. media Linn. (Caryophyllaceae) has been traditionally used in the treatment of inflammations of the digestive, renal, respiratory and reproductive tracts. The plant is employed in plasters used for broken bones and swellings. Despite a long tradition of use of some species, the genus has not been explored properly. In the concluding part, the future scope of Stellaria species, has been emphasized with a view to establish their multifarious biological activities and mode of action.

The whole plant of Stellaria media (family: Caryophyllaceae) has been tested for its antiobesity activity by using progesterone-induced obesity model in female albino mice. The effect of S. media on food consumption pattern, change in body weight, thermogenesis, lipid metabolism, and histology of fat pad. were examined. Methanolic and alcoholic extracts of the S. media were used in the study. Methanolic extract of S. media (MESM) have prevented the increase in body weight, adipose tissue weight and size, and upturned obesity and associated complications. MESM has also shown promising effects compared with alcoholic extract of S. media may be because of its multiple mechanisms. These findings suggest that antiobesity activity produced by MESM is because of its anorexic property mediated by saponin and flavonoid and partly of by its β-sitosterol content. β-Sitosterol in the plant extract was confirmed by thin-layer chromatography study. β-sitosterol is plant sterol having structural similarity with dietary fat which do the physical competition in the gastrointestinal tract and reduces fat absorption. Before carrying in vivo activity detail pharmacognostic and phytochemical analysis of the extracts was carried out. The plant has shown the presence of saponin, flavonoids, steroids and triterpenoids, glycosides, and anthocynidine. By this study, it can be concluded that, MESM is beneficial in suppression of obesity induced by progesterone.

Grote Muur of Grootbloemige muur (Stellaria holostea)

Chickweed

Chickweed Pesto

    • 1-2 cloves garlic

    • Salt to taste

    • 3 cups loosely packed chickweed

    • 3 tablespoons walnuts

    • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

    • ½ cup olive oil

In food processor, process garlic and walnuts until finelychopped. Add chickweed and oil and process until smooth.

Add parmesan cheese and process to just combine. Add salt to taste, if desired.

Serve with chips or crackers. I like to use it instead of mayonnaise on sandwiches.

Chickweed-honey cream

    • 1/8 cup chickweed infused olive oil

    • 2 and ½ teaspoons beeswax

    • 1/6 cup wheat germ oil or vitamin E oil

    • 2 teaspoons cocoa butter

    • 2 teaspoons chickweed tea

    • 1 tablespoon honey

Melt cocoa butter, beeswax, wheat germ oil (or vitamin E oil) and chickweed infused olive oil in a double boiler, over low heat.

Make chickweed tea: 1 tablespoon dried chickweed to ½ a cup of water. You can adjust portions however you wish and use fresh chickweed, if you prefer. After the tea has cooled a bit, add the honey to it.

Add the tea and honey mixture to the oil mixture, quickly, so the base won’t set. Whisk until it turns into a creamy consistency. I like to do this step with a blender, but it’s not necessary. Pour into a glass jar. Refrigeration is not necessary.

I like to use this cream all winter long on those stubborn dry spots. Works well for chapped lips, too. A little bit goes a long way.
