Lysimachia sp. / Wederik

De puntwederik (Lysimachia punctata) is een overblijvende plant, die ingedeeld wordt bij de sleutelbloemfamilie (Primulaceae), zoals in de Heukels. De plant wordt gebruikt in de siertuin en is in Nederland ook verwilderd. Van nature komt de puntwederik voor in Oost- en Zuidoost-Europa.

De plant wordt 40-100 cm hoog, heeft rechtopstaande, zacht behaarde stengels en wortelstokken. De eironde bladeren zitten in kransen van drie tot vier bladeren bijeen. Op de bladeren zitten onregelmatige rode klierpuntjes waaraan deze wederik zijn naam te danken heeft. Ze zijn goed te zien als het blad tegen het licht gehouden wordt.

The progress in the research of the chemical components and pharmacological activities of Lysimachia was reviewed. Lysimachia mainly contain flavonoids, saponins and phenolic acids, and some of the plants have been used in the treatment of fever, ulcers, diarrhea and as analgesic or anti-inflammatory agents. The plants of genus Lysimachia are widespread in China, so it is a singificants work to study their chemical ingredients and pharmacological activities.

Cytotoxic Activity of Embelin From Lysimachia Punctata

A major benzoquinone pigment, embelin (1), was isolated from the underground parts of Lysimachia punctata. Compound 1 showed a significant cytotoxic activity in vitro against B16 and XC cell lines with ED50 values of 13 microg/ml and 8 microg/ml, respectively.

embelin A member of the class of dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinones that is 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone which is substituted by an undecyl group at position 3. Isolated from Lysimachia punctata and Embelia ribes, it exhibits antimicrobial, antineoplastic and inhibitory activity towards hepatitis C protease.

An ethanol extract of Lysimachia mauritiana exhibits inhibitory activity against hepatitis E virus genotype 3 replication

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an etiological agent of acute hepatitis E, a self-limiting disease prevalent in developing countries. HEV can cause fulminant hepatic failure with high mortality rates in pregnant women, and genotype 3 is reported to trigger chronic hepatitis in immunocompromised individuals worldwide. Screening of plant extracts for compounds with potential anti-HEV effects led to the identification of a 70% ethanol extract of Lysimachia mauritiana (LME) that interferes with replication of the swine HEV genotype 3 replicon. Furthermore, LME significantly inhibited replication of HEV genotype 3 and expression of HEV ORF2 in infected cells without exerting cytotoxic effects. Collectively, our findings demonstrate the potential utility of LME in the development of novel antiviral drugs against HEV infection.
