Jerusalem (YC No 172)

Jerusalem claimed Jesus’ love;

Its people filled his heart;

But Pharisees knew Herod’s plan;

They warned, “You must depart.”

Although it was a dangerous place

He chose to persevere;

Determined to complete his work,

He would not bow to fear.

 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem,

In you are prophets killed;

You stone the messengers from God;

In you God’s voice is stilled;

Yet many times I wished to hold

Your people lovingly,

Like hens that gather all their chicks

To tend them constantly.”

They would not listen to his word;

The conflict grew intense;

But Jesus worked his works of love;

He sought no self-defence;

Once more we see the Jesus way

Confronting what was wrong;

No spite, no hate, no violent rage;

In love he sang his song.
