After Pentecost     Pentecost 10     Matthew 15:(10-20), 21-28, particularly verses 21-28

Confrontation (YA No 63)

She cried out aloud, “Have mercy on me.”

But Jesus ignored her passionate plea;

This public exchange, it broke strict Jewish lore;

This gentile, a woman, must quickly withdraw.

Disciples begged Jesus, “Send her away.”

But she did not heed this tragic display;

She still cried for help, but then Jesus replied

“Let children be nourished and dogs be denied.”

She was deeply hurt but not overcome;

She pleaded once more – this time for a crumb

That falls from the table; “The dogs need to eat;

They too have a life which is so bittersweet.”

When Jesus heard this he knew she was right;

He turned to her then with such great delight;

“Your faith is so great that your daughter is healed”

Once more we see Jesus as God’s love revealed.
