After Pentecost     Pentecost 9     John 6:1-21, particularly verses 1-15

To make Him King! (YB No 134)

The stories from the gospels tell

Of Jesus’ ministry;

They tell of crowds that followed him

That came from Galilee.

This day he saw the crowd and asked

“How can they all be fed?”

“A boy’, said Andrew, “has two fish

And just five loaves of bread.”

So Jesus prayed, then broke the bread;

All ate.  None were refused.

The thousands there were fed that day;

Twelve baskets full – not used!

When seeing this, the people said

“He is the promised one.”

They said, “This prophet should be king.”

By force, it could be done.

But Jesus wanted none of this;

He wanted solitude;

To be their king was not the way

To help this multitude.

Their need was never for a King

But for a change of heart;

When justice, mercy, peace prevail

Love pioneers their start.

We need not pray for someone royal

To mend this broken world;

We change it by our loving deeds;

God’s reign is thus unfurled.
