Easter to Pentecost     Easter 7     John 17:6-19, particularly verses 6-11

Jesus’ love of his disciples (YB No 122)

Jesus had some close companions,

To share in his ministry;

Jesus prayed for their protection,

As one might for family;

In the world he knew the dangers;

He knew evil’s treachery;

So he prayed they’d be united,

Stay together constantly.

Such a bond was so essential

When they faced controversy;

In the preaching of the gospel

They could meet hostility;

Jesus prayed that his disciples

Would display fidelity

To his message, to his mission,

Seeking justice fearlessly.

Jesus did not want disciples

Shielded from adversity;

But he prayed that in the struggle

They would live courageously;

So it is when we confront

The strength of cruel tyranny,

We will need the love of Jesus

To win through with victory.
