James and John were so ambitious

Seeking the ‘best’;

They requested special status,

Wanting the ‘best’;

They appealed for prize selection;

Jesus gave them strong correction;

Pointed in a new direction

To seek the ‘best’.

“In the world there are oppressors,

Ruling with might;

You should not be like aggressors

Ruling in might;

To be great and first among you

Be a slave and last to value

Any status that could lead to

Ruling with might.”

When we seek some extra power

Let us beware;

Self fulfilment can turn sour;

Let us beware;

When we crush all opposition,

If we covet rank, position,

When absorbed in our ambition

We should beware.

Let us be the humble servant -

Living in love;

In our serving be persistent –

Living in love;

We would shun all domination;

Give to others affirmation;

Foster reconciliation;

Living in love.
