After Pentecost     Pentecost 23     Matthew 25:14-30, particularly verses 14-25

An Active Faith (YA No 78)

Jesus, a Rabbi, was a Jewish sage;

He spoke to people living in his age;

He used his stories to proclaim his word,

And now today his truth can still be heard;

If we but listen with attentive ear

He might just lead us to a new frontier.

“A wealthy man, before he went away

Consigned his wealth to slaves, then went his way;

Some thirty thousand silver coins he gave;

Twelve and six thousand to each other slave;

The time went past and when the man returned

He asked each slave what had his money earned.

The slave with thirty thousand - he could tell

He doubled his consignment; he’d done well;

The one with twelve was likewise very pleased;

All opportunities, these two had seized;

The slave with six sat by his buried trust;

He thought it safe; he shielded it from rust.

Faith is not passive, does not hibernate;

Faith is love’s energy to raditate;

We are not called to ‘play it safe’ and sit,

But venture forth and never, ever quit;

Faith always acts as Jesus clearly shows;

It is good works in which our spirit grows.
