After Pentecost     Pentecost 5     Mark 5:21-43

Who deserves Love? (YB No 128)

When we probe the gospel stories

They have teachings quite profound;

When we search inside the writings

Deeper insights may be found;

Jesus and his central message

Speak to us of peace and grace;

Through these stories we find wisdom;

Through them we feel God’s embrace.

In the crowd a holy leader

Of the synagogue’s elite –

He was wealthy and respected,

Yet he begged at Jesus’ feet;

“Please, come place your hands of healing

On my child and make her well”

Jesus went but felt some pressure.

Someone’s hurting! He could tell.

He looked round and then this outcast,

Unclean woman, full of fear,

Kneeling, trembling there before him

Told the truth; begged him to hear;

Jesus then with great compassion

Said her faith had made her whole;

“You, my daughter, Go with healing.”

Peace restored this troubled soul.

In these stories we encounter

One of status, one of shame;

Outcast and religious leader –

Jesus loved them both the same;

His compassion knew no boundaries

That high status might demand;

Love, when real, is given freely;

Heeds no limits, no command.
