We move to visit Calvary (Vol 2 No 79)
We move to visit Calvary;
We pause before his agony;
A man hangs on a tragic tree,
But turns defeat to victory.
For in his cries no curse is heard;
No hatred, malice in his word.
Come near and listen to his cries;
The lonely pain of one who dies
Echoes through time across the skies;
It haunts, confronts, it mystifies.
For in his cries are tones of peace;
His plea is for all wrong to cease.
We linger still and watch with awe
As violent crowds, with vicious roar,
Demanded death; still wanted more;
Their purpose clear, just as in war.
But Jesus cries to God anew,
“Forgive. They know not what they do.”
This ancient struggle, with us still,
Prompts lawless rage to strike and kill;
But Jesus shows on Calv’y’s hill
That love alone acts to fulfil
The human hope for harmony,
For justice, joy, security.
