After Pentecost     Pentecost 19     Mark 10:2-16, particularly on verses 13-16

Jesus and the Children (YB No 144)

When people brought their children near

He put them on his knee;

Disciples tried to stop them there,

But Jesus gave an angry stare –

“Let children come to me.

Just bid them come to me.”

In children, Jesus found the marks,

In them he saw good signs;

He often took them in his arms;

“In such as these, with all their charms,

Is where God’s kingdom shines;

In such God’s kingdom shines.”

In saying this he shunned their lore;

He caused a sombre frown;

Their culture put the children last;

But Jesus did not heed the past;

He turned things up-side-down;

He turned things up-side-down.

As children we receive God’s reign

With happiness and glee,

Like children we can ask for more;

In wonder, open each new door

Excitedly to see

God’s gifts for you and me.
