Our sacred book (Vol 1 No 80)
Our sacred book - from which we learn
The story old, that changed the world,
And as we listen we discern
That truths and insights are unfurled.
Creation myths and sagas told
By word of mouth for ages long,
Then written down these stories bold
Became the rule for right and wrong.
Religion of the Hebrew race
Was taught by priests with pious skill,
But prophets saw a deep disgrace
In sacrifice without goodwill.
The rules and statutes of the Jews
Can still enlighten us today,
But when we read them we must choose
What to discard, what to obey.
The Gospels forge a stirring tale
Of Jesus and his ministry;
His dying love with wood and nail;
His living love eternally.
Disciples, teachers of the Way
Proclaim the Jesus they adored;
Their courage and their zeal display
Commitment to their servant Lord.
This human searching after God
Is told to urge us to believe;
To help us tread where they have trod;
And thus abundant life receive.
