After Pentecost     Pentecost 6     Mark 6:1-13, particularly verses 1-6a

Care in face of Hostility (YB No 129)

In his home town in Galilee

Jesus was shunned repeatedly;

Of him, they said insultingly

“He’s from a common family.”

 “Where did he get all this?”, they said.

“This carpenter has been misled;

“What is this wisdom he’s been fed?

“What nonsense has entrapped his head?”

Jesus’ reply was firm, direct;

“All prophets always have respect;

But from home-towns they can expect

People will voice abuse, unchecked.”

These insults blocked what he could do;

He healed the sick, but very few;

With hostile crowds he sought anew

To let his love and care shine through.

So let our love be on display

In conflicts, struggles; come what may,

We find that Jesus points the way

To let compassion rule each day.
