God is in nature (Vol 2 No 38)

Humans are minute within the cosmic dream;

Are we Nature’s rulers?  Are we so supreme?

Dare we claim dominion or priority

When we’re so dependent on earth’s charity?

We are not the masters, but the ones to whom

Stewardship is given of creation’s womb.

Can we open flowers to the morning sun?

Can we teach the tiger how it aught to run?

Can we catch the thunder, make the storm subside?

Can we colour tulips? Can we turn the tide?

Can we paint the rainbow? Help the eagle soar?

These are Nature’s wonders – we just stand in awe.

Facing Nature’s rumblings, grappling with her way,

Earth’s chaotic outbursts, often on display;

Floods and raging bush-fires, earthquakes come unchecked,

Hurricanes, tsunamis leave our cities wrecked;

We are prone to anger; say “God doesn’t care”;

Contemplating losses leaves us in despair.

We should not imagine Nature is our slave;

Not for us to sanction how she should behave.

She works by a process sometimes causing pain;

She is not controlled by thoughts of human gain.

Bigger is the picture where we find our place

Bigger still the canvas where we find God’s grace.
