Easter 7     John 17:1-11, particularly verses 6-11

Jesus’ Love of his Disciples (YA No 50)

Jesus and the Father’s glory

Were declared a unity;

And disciples were acknowledged

In a close community;

In the preaching of the gospel

Such a bond was sanctuary;

For to be outside their number

Could invite hostility.

Jesus had some close companions,

Just like all humanity;                

Jesus prayed for their protection,

As one would for family;

In the world he knew the dangers;

He knew evil’s treachery;

So he prayed they’d be united,

And find some security.  

In the preaching of the gospel

Jesus has authority,

For he lived a life of loving,

Manifest in Galilee;                

When we follow, when we listen

To his words expectantly,

We will find this gracious loving

Gives us life abundantly.
