Differences and Growth

With competing factions already in Rome, and much diversity of thought, we must realize multiple doctrines could be found in Rome.

Rom 14:1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

There were many teachings already circulating that could be disputed. The church was to maintain an environment of edification where weaker Christians could grow, without opening the door to disputes over matters of doubt or that produced doubt. Such as food laws.

Just because the church was set for edification, that doesn't mean the competing faction always complied, and doubtful doctrines had been circulating.

Doctrines different from those originally delivered.

Rom 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

One set (the weak) were to be received and taught, one set was to be avoided(those who had become self-served).

Many of the doubtful doctrines could already be found in Rome. We must realize that bringing forth every quote of Christians from the first century would not produce a real Christian faith.

A quote of individual belief, if deviating from scripture, would not establish the real faith. Some beliefs were based in twisted scripture.

The persecution of Nero gave those willing to compromise a chance to gain more power. Thousands of true Christians were slaughtered and those willing to deny Jesus altogether or just enough to survive could make it through the onslaught.

The faithful died and the unfaithful lived to receive power. The faithful in the church had been greatly weakened.
