Lord's Supper

As with baptism many faith only teachers use Paul's statements in I Corinthians 1 and 2 to minimize the Lord's Supper. Yet you will see his statements strengthen the command instead of minimizing them.

1Co 2:2  For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

Paul is using his office title "Christ" with his personal name, this highlights the office of "Christ".

It was because he didn't want to know anything else but Christ Jesus that he taught Christ's commands. If he taught something, it is because it was part of Christ. Anything Paul taught fell under this attitude.

On the surface some may mis-understand Paul saying all that matters is Christ's death, but the Greek sentence structure isn't so simple.

Because the term Christ is interjected, it is an object pointing to Christ's messianic office as teacher. He was God's official messenger. Paul wasn't deflating Christ's commands but strengthening them. He is strengthening the idea Christ's traditions are far superior than man's wisdom, and shows he got his teaching from Christ.

After making the statement Paul in the same letter states,

1Co 11:23  For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

Thus he makes it more official by tying the doctrine of the Lord's Supper to Christ himself.

This sentence structure strengthens Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Not only in the Corinthian letter but anywhere it is used.

Act 16:31  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Since Christ is an object it strengthens the need to heed his messenger office.

as in

Act 3:22  For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

Act 3:23  And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Honoring his prophetic office is necessary for salvation.

Mat 23:8  But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

Mat 23:9  And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Mat 23:10  Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ

Christ is our Master. The term Christ and Master are used interchangeably here.

If he told us to be baptized and keep the Lord's Supper, only an insubordinate would argue against it.

Paul's real meaning by the statement,

1Co 2:2  For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

He only knew Christ's as his master. There was no other point to be made. The statement strengthens Christ's commands instead of minimizing them. Christ being crucified means they are now in force as a covenant.

Imagine Paul saying he only wanted to know Jesus Christ, this meaning the acceptance of Jesus as messianic master, and a teacher arguing it means you don't have to do what he says.

That in essence is what is being done.
