Catholic Name

I have searched different Bibles to find the name Catholic, but have yet to find the word Catholic or universal.

In other words, the name Catholic isn't in scripture. It is of human origin. The name of the Church would be God given.

Isa 62:2  And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name.

and

Isa 65:15  And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name:

I have also sought the name Catholic in many early writings, but haven't found it as a name except in headers and footers that were added after the original writings.

It does seem the word Catholic was used as an adjective starting in the 2nd century, describing the church, not as a name. It was referred to as Catholic because it comprised all nations.

It was also termed Catholic because it comprised universal salvation for all people, so that at the time it was used they believed salvation was fully given and no longer evolving. Which seems to be the opposite of Catholic theory. It seems to correspond with Jude 3.

Jud 1:3  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Thus the doctrine was already delivered, and later alterations were not of Christian origin.

Thus Catholic was not the original name of the Church. It became a description and was used as a description post apostolic. It later became the official name of the body called Catholic.

One reason given by Catholics for adopting the name is their church was universally in the world, in all places, but history pretty much challenges this contention.

Groups calling themselves Christians who were non-papal, who practiced believers baptism existed all over. Since they did not have centralized authority Catholics described them as separate churches. This was false since they saw themselves under Christ's rule and accepted each other as Christians.

They existed more universally than what became the Catholic body.

Catholics did not have larger footprints in Africa or England prior to military interventions.

The Donatist group was larger in Africa and the Celtic Church in England. Donatists and Celtics taught the same theology early.

The term Catholic was used to put down other local groups, since they believed the church would fill the world, any local group without a world-wide hierarchy would not be accepted as authentic. This was actually a false application the Catholics used to deny other Christians, they were wrong because Bishops were designed to act independently among their congregations, what we term as autonomous from other congregations.
