Jesus and Faith Only

The teaching of Jesus must be mixed with faith for it to actually help us. Plus we must be a doer of the word and not a hearer only. Jesus was the author of eternal salvation to those who believe. Sounds like faith only just because it has the word believe in it. Yet, an author has a message within his writing and the message requires our action. If so a true believer would believe we need to take action..

The word believe here has an object, it is toward the message Christ authored.

It isn't believe only, because the message has action involved. The parable below has Christ's message and it clearly has work involved.

There are many passages that have the word believe and also have the object of his message as his word.

Mat 21:32  For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him

Belief in Jesus usage is when you repent to his message.,

Jesus was upbraiding them for not being baptized of John.

The word believe is clearly tied to his message of repentance and baptism in this context..

Jesus saw believing as repenting to a message. There are other passages we could look at as well.

In the passage Jesus told a parable that tied working to doing a Father's will.

Mat 21:28  But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

Mat 21:29  He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.

Mat 21:30  And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.

Mat 21:31  Whether of them twain did the will of his father?

This seems similar to Matthew 7:21

Mat 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

The terms work and doeth both imply action on our part.

Jesus wasn't faith only, he also saw our works in connection with a Father - Child relationship. It wasn't a question of legalism but relationship. Again, not all commands center in legalism, some center around a relationship to a person. A father, a master, a loved one.

Other passages you may look at that see the word believe tied to his message:

Joh 3:12  If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

Joh 5:38  And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

Joh 5:47  But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

Joh 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

Joh 12:48  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
