Eis Deceptions

There are some common approaches to translating eis "for" in Acts 2 :38, there are also some common deceptions that have been used over the last 50 years in debates and in articles written.

A Member of the Dallas Theological Seminary, a baptist group, posted an article saying eis in some cases meant "because" based upon the following passages.

His main proof came from Luke 5:19 or John 3:19 where eis (into) and because (dia) are in the same sentence, but eis was not the word translated because in the sentences.

The deception was to make it sound like eis was the word translated because. The passage was used in debates, tracts and or articles. Notice below eis was translated "into" in both cases, not "because".

In both cases eis is translated into, but they were able to make it look like "because" in the sentence was from eis. At first I thought it was just a mistake on their part but it was used by greek speaking debaters and used over several years, multiple times. Someone should have caught it, or maybe they just passed the argument down to each other without ever checking it out.

There are many opportunities for them to switch meaning when words like into and because are in the same sentence. I have seen this deception more than once.

Nevertheless, they prosperred in debates with it and because audiences didn't check, it seemed as if they were actually winners. They were actually just deceivers, or at the least very unskilled at exegesis.

My main point is to watch for such deceptions and point them out when found. One article has been pulled off the internet without a public apology after it was exposed.
