Oral vs Written

Catholics tend to say that some knowledge was passed orally and other knowledge was passed in writing. In reality it was the same thing. The content was the same and eventually what was taught orally was written for confirmation.

The content of written and oral was the same, and the written eventually covered the entire faith.

There was a time in which oral tradition had more content than the written, but as each piece of written testimony was delivered to the church the written testimony covered all of the oral teaching.

Notice as we go back through the events that the source for their decision was the Holy Ghost.

Act 15:28  For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

Notice they chose to write letters and to send chosen men with the letters.

Act 15:27  We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

The oral teaching and the written were to be the same, there was no distinction in content.

Act 15:26  Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It was for the name of Christ, thus wresting in his name/authority.

Act 15:25  It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

The church was united in seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance. Not all agreed with the decision as many judaizers were present, but the Apostles and Elders were united in seeking a God given decision.

Act 15:23  And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:

This is one example showing oral teaching and written to be the same. There are others.

Luke was written to a man who had been instructed orally, Luke wrote to confirm what was taught orally.

Luk 1:4  That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. Luk 1:3  It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

Therefore the written Gospel was the same as the Oral teaching given previously..
