Mary Worship

For centuries Catholics endorsed the worship of Mary, relics, and saints. There are many Catholic writings with imprimatur signs that used the word "dulia" to describe Mary worship. It is the word worship.

Though this has been denied in recent years, the facts are Catholics do worship Mary. Many web sites today do deny Catholics worship Mary. Yet, historically they have. In many cases today they would say they honor or venerate, but not worship. Yet, for centuries they applied the word worship.

see Timmerman's Lectures on Catholicism

In Outline of Dogmatic Theology, Vol. II, by Bernard Bartmann, a Papal prelate

"The saints who live with Christ offer the prayers of the faithful to God, and it is good and useful to invoke their intercession." It is with these words that the Council of Trent takes the defense of the ancient practice of worshipping the saints in the church, and declares that those who refuse the worship of the saints and declare it foolish have an impious thought...It is likewise permissible and useful to honor the relics of the saints...The Council of Trent pronounced itself in favor of their worship in these words, 'Likewise the holy bodies of the martyred saints and of other saints who lived with Christ, and who were living members of Christ and temples of the Holy Spirit, and who will be raised by him and glorified by life eternal, should be honored by the faithful'...The church has likewise protected the worship of images against attacks and has declared it permissible and useful."

pps 220-225

So we see worship of saints and relics was considered an ancient Catholic practice. Even though the Council of Trent used the word "honored" in Bartmann's quote, it was clearly being interpreted as worship by the Pope's inner circle. That is how it was being taught.

In Boulenger's  Catholic Doctrine part two, also with an imprimatur.

To the canonized saints is due the worship of dulia...a worship that may be rendered to them anywhere...Let us render to the Holy Virgin , to the angels and the saints the worship that belongs to them.

They did believe dulia meant worship because they described it as such with other words.

So they do command worship to saints. There are many other works we could cite as well. The interesting thing is they also worship angels which was condemned by Paul. Worshipping angels according to the apostle can cost us our reward.

From Colossians we can see that such worship is not harmless. We also see the worship of angels is forbidden in Revelation.

This angel specifically calls himself a brother and a prophet, John was forbidden to worship a messenger of God's word..
