Faith Only Baptism

Augustine's idea of a faith only baptism where the person only had to have faith in Christ's sacrifice is the real issue.

1. Can a baby be baptized without instruction.

2. Can a person be baptized without a view to repentance toward Christ's teaching?

3. Could a person be baptized solely with a view toward forgiveness, and no view toward repentance?

First, all baptisms in the New Testament were those who were taught first. We see no infant baptisms even among household baptism. They were all taught the Gospel first.

Act 10:44  While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

Act 16:32  And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

The examples of household baptism included all hearing the word of the Lord. We see teaching and the idea of repentance included in the message.

Acts 2:38 - repent and be baptized

Act 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Repentance and sincere conversion in Acts 3:19 preceeded forgiveness. It was a condition of it.

Act 11:18  When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Faith only such as baptist's teach and faith only in baptism as Augustine taught were heresies, neither required repentance to subjects such as worship or moral problems like drunkenness.
