Catholics and Word Brother

one reason to doubt Catholic teaching concerning the ever virginity is the inconsistency of their arguments. One example Is the usage of the word brother to mean cousin while at the same time saying Christ's brethren were actually half brothers, children of Joseph from a previous marriage.

In such a scenario they would legally be brothers. There would be no need to argue the word adelphus would mean cousin.

Catholics have taught several different scenarios for the ever virginity over the centuries.

1. Jerome taught they were cousins through a sister of Mary.

2. Others taught his brethren were half brothers by Joseph.

3. Hegesippus taught Jesus' brothers were cousins through Joseph's brother, not Mary's sister.

In other words you see conflicting arguments without any clear proof. They simply do whatever it takes to uphold their dogma. Thus they were in genral disagreement with each other over the details.

These are simply theories making the dogma theologically possible.

Also, if you study their teaching on different words, you will see they adopt the word to their doctrine. As in Matt 1:25, he knew her not until she broughtforth her firstborn son.

"The word "until" and words similar to it often signify eternity. In the Sacred Scripture it is said of Christ: In His days shall shine forth righteousness and an abundance of peace, until the moon be taken away (Ps. 71:7), but this does not mean that when there shall no longer be a moon at the end of the world"

There usage of the word isn't really accurate in this verse, the word "until" may speak of degree in conjunction with time. meaning "even" as the moon will  be taken away. The blessing will continue even as the moon is upheld by God's power, then a predetermined end to the moon will occur. It speaks of a determined time.

Jesus' messianic reign would end when the world is destroyed. Then he would assume a new position.

The word does not mean eternity here, for the moon will someday be gone. The righteous will be blessed on earth until that time, and will be blessed in eternity but under different eternal rule.

The reign of Christ was to be temporary and not eternal. The Jews saw the messiah coming into his kingdom as the thief on the cross eluded.

"remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom"

The messianic kingdom was not an eternal arrangement. It would have a beginning and an end.

1Co 15:24 ThenG1534 cometh theG3588 end,G5056 whenG3752 he shall have delivered upG3860 theG3588 kingdomG932 to God,G2316

2Pe 3:10  But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

A good example of a pre-appointed time being used with "until" is

Mic 5:3 ThereforeH3651 will he give them up,H5414 untilH5704 the timeH6256 that she which travailethH3205 hath brought forth:H3205 then the remnantH3499 of his brethrenH251 shall returnH7725 untoH5921 the childrenH1121 of Israel.H3478

The word speaks of a predetermined time, not necessarily eternity.

As in Matthew 1:25, the predetermined tme I Christ's birth. After Mary could have had relations with Joseph. Nothing forbidding.
