Apollos and Alexandria

The fact Apollos was born in Alexandria and was likely tied to the church there makes the changes made by Augustine more aggregeous. Apollos taught the way of Christ accurately, he only knew the baptism of John until baptized in Ephesus.

Apollos came from the same area as the jewish group that translated the Septuagint. He was known to be mighty in the scriptures. He went about proving Jesus was the Christ.

The teaching of Alexandria would have been accurate and only needed a correction for Christian baptism. All or at least most in Alexandria would have needed re-baptism as Apollos did.

Catholics arrested and killed many rebaptizers in North Africa near Alexandria, but it seems a prominent teacher from Alexandria went through it under Paul's direction. Yes, he only knew John's baptism so he wasn't rebaptized in a Christian baptism sense, but it shows being ignorant of the actual baptism necessary would warrant further teaching and proper baptism. So rebaptizing in Northern Africa wasn't against scripture at all. It would only be wrong if you rebaptized those who had a proper baptism and wounded their consciences.

The Donatist of North Africa were actual Christians who were hated by Catholics because they rebaptized many of their group. Most today see the Donatists as the body of Christ who were persecuted, being driven from Africa and ending up in places like Britain. The libraries of England have referrences to them and the churches of Britain seem to have been planted by them. Catholics were not the original Christians in England. We know today for instance that Saint Patrick was not Catholic.
