Acts 22:16

Acts 22:16 is a verse that ties baptism to washing away sin. Of course baptists would say only the blood of Christ washes away sin, they fail to see that baptism isn't working independently of Christ's death but with it.

We are actually baptized into his death.

Act 22:16  And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

We are baptized into Christ

Gal 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

and those baptized into Christ are baptized into his death,

Rom 6:3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death

Thus they falsely accuse us of saying baptism saves and leads to forgiveness apart from Christ's death, but we believe it is working with Christ's death. Baptism is an act of faith toward Christ, not faith toward our power.

Nevertheless, Acts 22:16 proves either way that faith alone isn't true.

Paul had an obedient faith 3 days before v. 16 was spoken, see Acts 22:10, and his sins were still not forgiven in Acts 22:16. Whether forgiven with baptism or as some teach through calling on the name of the Lord, his sins were still present.

Faith only is clearly false.

Whether through baptism or prayer (Both prayer and baptism are works), his sins were not removed at faith.

Actually, calling on the name of the Lord is fullfilled in baptism, the idea of "calling upon the name"does not imply the voice in prayer, but seeking relief based on someone's title or to be surnamed. In some cases it carries the implication of adoption into a family and receiving their last name.

If true it would mean we receive Christ's family name at baptism.

This fits Galations 3.

Gal 3:26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Gal 3:27  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

The idea of putting on Christ being to receive his name through adoption.
