Fulbright English Teaching Assistant

Loni O’Grady was born in Iowa, but grew up and spent most of her life in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2012, she graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with two bachelor’s degrees: Spanish and Secondary Foreign Language Education with an endorsement in ESL education. Loni also received a degree in Spanish and completed the META program at Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Queretaro, Mexico. While already fluent in English and Spanish, she hopes to learn Portuguese through community involvement and with the help of her students.

Loni’s non-academic interests include windsurfing, kite boarding (she will readily admit she is still quite new to the sport), dancing, soccer, hiking, cooking, trying exotic foods, and traveling. She has lived abroad and traveled to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Panama, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, and is extremely excited to get to know Brazil. While in Brazil, she plans to complete her “Brazil Bucket List” by learning to dance Forro, drum in Carnaval, learning to cook feijoada and surf among other things. Loni is overjoyed to be living in Ilheus and working as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at UESC in 2013.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistant

Sarah Sanderson grew up in the small town of Holland, Michigan with her older brother, Ben, and her younger sister, Susie. She attended Hope College in the same town and earned her B.S. and B.A. in Biology and Spanish. After studying abroad in Chile, she realized that she loved Spanish and wanted to teach language and culture at the university level. She earned her M.A. in Spanish Linguistics at The Ohio State University while teaching undergraduate language classes. After two years of teaching English in China and a year teaching in New Zealand, she is thrilled to be able to be able to live and work in Brazil. Sarah is married to her husband, Sean, who is currently working with university students in the Western U.S; he is very excited to come to Brazil in August. Fulbright Monitor

Shalon Rocha was born in Ilhéus, a city located in the southern coastal region of Bahia, Brazil. Since he was pretty young, he is keen on singing and learning new languages. At the age of 16, he studied Sign Languages, and became a volunteer leader of the “The Ministry of LIBRAS (Brazilian Sign Language)” teaching deaf people and training new interpreters. In college, Shalon is majoring in "Foreign Languages Applied to International Negotiations", which includes the teaching of three languages (English, Spanish and French), aiming to broaden his job opportunities all over the world. His passion for English has led him to be more involved with the Fulbright Program, which contributed to his first lecture in English: “The benefits of Learning a Foreign Language and how to become fluent”, in 2012. This year, he is the new monitor of Fulbright at UESC, and he aims to emblazon the project, improve his English, make new friends and travel abroad soon to experience what he would not have otherwise.

Divulgado no dia 20 de janeiro de 2011, o resultado do edital que seleciona instituições públicas de ensino superior (IES) anfitriãs do Programa de Assistente de Ensino de Língua Inglesa para Projetos Institucionais. Ao total foram selecionados projetos de 16 universidades, entre as quais a UESC, cujo projeto - "Língua Inglesa e seus aspectos culturais: a recepção do Outro na construção de si" (ver arquivo anexo abaixo) - é coordenado pela professora Tatiany Pertel Sabaini Dalben.

A iniciativa é uma parceria entre a Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes) e a Comissão para o Intercâmbio Educacional entre os Estados Unidos da América e o Brasil (Comissão Fulbright). Os projetos possuem caráter institucional e contemplam ações voltadas para os cursos de graduação.

A duração dos trabalhos é de até quatro anos e contemplam a inserção de um falante nativo, na condição de assistente de ensino. O assistente deve ser cidadão estadunidense, recém-graduado com alguma experiência em ambiente educacional e em ensino em sala de aula. Deve ter proficiência oral e escrita em uma língua neolatina, algum conhecimento de português e disponibilidade para permanecer no Brasil de fevereiro a novembro. As duas candidatas aprovadas para o curso de Letras da UESC em 2011 são: Amalia Zeidman e Carolyn Wright.

O objetivo do programa é contribuir para a elevação da qualidade dos cursos brasileiros de letras, inglês. A iniciativa pretende valorizar a formação e a relevância social dos profissionais do magistério da educação básica, por meio do fomento a experiências metodológicas e práticas docentes de caráter inovador. Há o estímulo a propostas que promovam o desenvolvimento das habilidades de comunicação e o incentivo a propostas que contemplem a inclusão de conteúdos culturais, sociais e históricos da sociedade estadunidense na formação dos futuros docentes.

É uma grande oportunidade de intercâmbio linguístico e cultural para os alunos e professores de Letras - Língua Inglesa da UESC.
