Assignments for UESC Anglophone Literature students

Task 1 Who's Isaias Carvalho? Read the Course Description, the Course Plan (on the right column), Assessment, and the Bibliography of Anglophone Literature - UESC.

Task 2 Go to Questions on Literature. Be ready for group discussion.

Task 3 Go to A few teaching/learning principles. Be ready to discuss them with your peers and the professor. Reflect upon them. Pick out one of them which is your number 1.

Task 4 Go to Some Anglophone Authors and some of their works. Use that page to subsidise your choice of author/theme/work for your focused term research and presentations.

Task 5 Go to Critical Approaches to Literature. Answer the questions.

Task 6 Go to Poems in English, by Isaias Carvalho. Is that Anglophone literature or what? [Task canceled for 2017.2]

Task 7 Read the information about Journal Writing. Once a month you are expected to turn in your journal writing notebook with one (or more) journal entry (ies) with at least 150 words. [3 entries throughout the course] [Task canceled for 2017.2]

Task 8 Go to The beginnings (in: The Cambridge History of English and American Literature). Answer the questions which will be provided by your professor. Open the file (Literaturas Anglófonas_Beginnings English Literature History) attached at the bottom of this page.

Task 14 Go to the Shakespeare page. Click on "Shakespeare's Sonnets" (Links). Pick out one of the sonnets, either randomly or after thorough reading. Bring your considerations, insights and findings to share with your peers.

Task 19 Go to the page on John Dryden. Read Life of John Dryden. Choose the 3 most relevant pieces of information about his life. Be ready to discuss them with your peers and the professor. Reflect upon them.

Task 20 Go to the page on John Dryden. Answer the questions on the Period of the Restoration.

Task 21 Go to Romanticism and "The Lady of Shallot". Do some research on Romanticism in the US, and Romanticism in general. Answer the exercise proposed. Then, Listen to the song version of the poem and refer it to the characteristics of Romanticism. Also, do not forget to take notes to share with your peers.

Task 22 Go to the Wuthering Heights page. Follow the instructions, watch the movie, and answer the questions.

Task 23 Go to the Edgar Allan Poe page. Do some research on Poe's life, times and works. There is a link to Wikipedia as a starting point. Be ready to discuss and share information about Poe's biography.

Task 24 Go to the Edgar Allan Poe page. Open the 3 "The raven" files at the bottom of the page. Read the poem both in English and in Portuguese. Also, listen to its audio version. Be ready to discuss it in class.

Task 25 Go to the Edgar Allan Poe page. Click on Edgar Allan Poe's photo to go to an anthology of his works. Choose one of his short stories. Be ready to tell the story to the class and share information about it, referring back to all we've read about Poe and his works.

Task 26 Go to the Romantic Authors page. Do the task proposed.

Task 27 Go to Dubliners - James Joyce. Read the short story "The boarding house". Be ready for discussion. Highlight excerpts and make comments/reflections on the language (style), the plot, the structure, the criticial reviews, etc.

Task 28 Go to The Road Not Taken. Do some research on Robert Frost. Read the poem. Be ready to share your answers to the question proposed, besides other comments on the author's biography and works.

Task 29 Go to the O Artigo Científico page. Use the guidelines provided to write your final paper. Share your impressions, doubts and findings.

Task 30 Click here, and read about one of the black writers listed. Take notes and make comments in your journal. Be ready to share biographical and literary information about the author you choose.

Task 31 Open the attached file (at the bottom of this page) with Jamaica Kincaid's "On seeing England for the first time". Prepare to discuss it.
