Youghal Cycling Club Notes - Sunday 20th January, 2013

Club Spins While the temperatures are dropping it is still encouraging to see large numbers of members rolling out on the regular club spins. The mileage and pace has been steadily increasing over the past weeks with both groups now covering 90-100km daily on the weekend spins. With the cold weather it is great to see the groups itching to get to the front for the bit of extra effort and beat back the cold. Keeping the groups together, this extra hard work attitude, is building the group ability and preparing them nicely for the coming seasons riding. Some might even say it is de-stressing the guys who have been hard at work all week and seeing all these midweek training spins clocking up on the various social media postings….haha. This last weekend saw us travel west on Saturday through Killeagh – Castlemartyr – Cloyne – Midleton and Dungourney before returning to Youghal with a nice 3 hours cycling in the legs. Sunday then saw both groups taking in similar routes as they cycled The Vee via Clashmore – Aglish – Cappaquinn & Lismore before returning to Youghal with just under 4 hours cycling complete. More of the same next week!

Spinning & Core Training With the success of the spinning and core training classes last year we will now be resuming these. We have booked the studio in Aura, Youghal for Wednesdays from 8pm beginning January 23rd 2013. Admission is E5 and open to YCC members.

Membership Club membership is now overdue and we would ask all members to make contact with Club Treasurer, John Walsh, regarding this.

Club Merchandise The leisure kits are in please contact John Walsh.

How to mend a puncture

1. First, invest in a spare inner tube. We recommend replacing tubes as opposed to repairing.

2. Undo the brake quick-release. To take off the wheel use the quick-release lever on the hub. For rear wheels, pull back on the rear derailleur, then lower the wheel down through the brake pads and then forward slightly to clear the chain and the derailleur.

3. Slip the flat end of a tyre lever between the rim and the tyre, bend back and hook it on to one of the spokes. Take the next lever and do the same about 5cm further around the tyre. Remove the first lever then move it further along the rim and use it to pry off the tyre again until one side is free.

4. Take the inner tube out and inflate. Check for thorns, wire or anything that may have caused the puncture. Take the tyre fully off the rim and inspect inside and outside for glass or debris. Check the rim to make sure no spoke ends have worn through the rim strip.

5. Hold the inflated tube to your ear: you may be able to hear air escaping. If you can't find the spot, hold part of the tube under water and watch for bubbles. Slowly move the tube through the water. Once you find the puncture on the tube examine the same location on the tyre and rim to determine if there are any foreign objects that may have caused the puncture (glass or thorns). If you find any, then remove.

6. Put one side of the tyre back on the rim. Place the tube back inside the tyre, beginning at the valve and working around the tyre. It should be slightly inflated.

7. Now, using the tyre levers, begin putting the free side of the tyre back inside the rim. Start near the valve and work the levers around in opposite directions. Be careful not to pinch the inner tube.

8. When you are left with about 15cm still loose, it might be difficult to get the tyre back on. Use two tyre levers to keep each end of the loose bit of tyre in place, then use the third to pop the tyre wall back inside the rim.

9. Slightly inflate the tyre and inspect around the tyre rim on both sides to ensure the tube is not trapped between the tyre and the wheel rim.

10. Once all is clear complete pumping the tyre to between 100-140psi.

11. Replace the wheel, tighten the quick release levers on the rims and brakes.

12. Give a hand roll of the wheel to ensure that it is aligned correctly and not rubbing with the brakes.
