Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 17th June 2012

Summer League This week we held the ninth week of our Summer League. This format of this week’s league was the 2nd Time Trial of the series. Starting at Killeagh and finishing 10km later at Summerfield Cross. With strong wind and rain all day a depleted field of fifteen riders assembled for the race. Fastest rider on the night was Jon Flynn to claim his first win of the series. He was closely followed by John Tobin in 2nd place with Tony Walsh, Killian Keneally & John Treacy tying for 3rd place. Due to the poor weather conditions all the times were down on the previous time trial. With 5 bonus points up for the riders closest to their previous attempt it was John Tobin and John Treacy who split the spoils, only dropping 2 seconds on theor previous effort. Again, thanks to the timekeepers and marshals that come out every week, please keep it up! The final week of the series will be held this Thursday night, 21st June. The format of the race will be a 40km road race around the Gortaroo circuit. There are three riders in contention to win the event – Tony Walsh, John Treacy and Killian Keneally, so I am sure a good nights racing is on the cards! Riders and marshals are asked to attend from 6.30pm at Summerfield Cross.

The top 10 riders in league table stand as follows:

Name Category TOTAL

Walsh, Tony 3 47

Sportiffs Last weekend saw our riders head off to Greystones to ride in the annual Wicklow 200km. With bright skies and very little wind, a great days cycling was had by all, on what is a very challenging 200km course with 2700m of vertical climbing. Last weekend was also a weekend for family cycling fun in Waterford and we had the Flynn family head off for the day. With many skills demonstrations and competitions for juveniles it was great to see Shay Flynn claim his first cycling medal for winning his U6 race. Well done Shay, hopefully the first of many! All in all a good weekend for the Flynn’s as Daddy won his Time Trial race on Friday, followed up by son’s win on Saturday! Next up on the sportiff calendar is the An Post, Tour De Burren. This is being held on Saturday, 23rd June. We will have a bunch of riders going up, so keep posted for more information!

Club Spins These are still very popular with groups going out at pre-arranged times (below) all week. The routes are decided based on the weather and riders capability. Chat and craic is plenty. Come stocked with the usual drinks and bars for on the bike, spare tube in case of puncture and a couple of euro for the cup of coffee and banter at the midway stop. This week our 8am group covered a challenging 120km circuit to Newcastle and up over Mount Mellary. The 9am group followed much of the same route, avoiding the big climbs, rolling in with 120km also. The 10am group decided to cover the East Ferry circuit and did a comfortable 55km circuit. Well done to all!
