YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 26th JUNE 2011

TEAM YOUGHAL RAAM

Last Sunday, the 26th of June, Team Youghal made history by becoming the first Irish Team to complete the RAAM. The route covered over 3,000 miles, climbing over 170,000 ft., crossing 12 states and passing through 88 counties. It for 24 hrs a day, every day until it was completed with teams and riders covering an average of between 350 to 500 miles a day. 8 riders and 10 support staff completed this mammoth challenge in aid of The Emer Casey Foundation whose aim it is to raise awareness and funds in the fight against Ovarian / Uterine Cancer. The 8 rider team, that put their bodies on the line for the event, are all members of Youghal C.C. and Midleton Cycling & Triathlon Club who were namely, Ger Flanagan, Tommy Roche, Christy McCarthy, Brian Fitzgerald, Kieran Groeger, Brian Hehir, Alan Sheehan and Mike Hines. All at Youghal Cycling Club would like to congratulate Team Youghal and their crew on completing this unbelievably tough sporting challenge. Watch this space fro a more detailed report in the coming weeks.

WEEKLY CLUB SPIN – Sunday 26th June

Last Sunday a group of 12 departed Moby Dicks at 8.00am for a scenic trip along the coast to Tramore with a return leg back the main road via Mahon Falls !!. Not so scenic on the road however as a lingering fog and strong wind hampered our effort for the entire spin. This was the clubs first long spin since the Mizen to Malin Head challenge and a tough day in the saddle was to be had by all with the exception of the puncture king who must have had an unforgettable day. All safely returned home however for 3.00pm with a challenging 170km completed.

BRING ON THE RING – Saturday 02nd July 2011

A large contingent from the Youghal Club will as usual be traveling to Killarney this weekend to take part in the annual Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle, A 180km cycle around the Ring Of Kerry. Some club members are heading down on Friday evening with the remainder heading down early on Saturday morning. All traveling are asked to let the club secretary know which day they are traveling so that we can organize our start time on the morning of the event.

Midweek Spins.

Midweek spins are now in full flow and take place every Tuesday and Thursday evenings with a 7.00pm SHARP depart time. These spins usually take between 1.5hrs and 2 hrs to complete and are run off at a very high tempo to bring on everyone’s top end speed and get the heart rate pumping. A second group will shortly be organized to roll off at the same time every Tuesday and Thursday, but at a much more comfortable pace, so watch this space for details.

Weekend Spins.

As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 8.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate and covers on average of between 100 to 130km. A second group also departs at 8.00am for a 4 - 5 hour spin, and covers a 100 to 120km distance. A third group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes around 3 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to 40km. The pace is again very comfortable. This is an ideal group for anyone interested in taking up the sport. The Ladies group has also now kicked off for the year with a weekly spin departing from Moby Dicks every Saturday at 9.00am. New members or visitors to the area are always welcome to any of the groups. If you have any questions about the club or attending one of our weekend spins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 for details. Until next week, safe cycling!

MUNSTER LEISURE LEAGUE

Recognised as one of the Best Cycling Routes in North Kerry / West

Limerick, ‘The Coast Run’ which hugs the Shannon Estuary extended

into Clare, again the route followed the Estuary on the Clare side.

Second Group about to Head Off on the 120km Route,

Difficult weather conditions, cyclists comments afterwards, included, ‘windy and tough’

‘Food stops and marshaling excellent’.

Inaugral Clare Coast Run.

(Not for the faint-hearted!!)

Weather conditions weren’t great, wind, and persistent drizzle, made cycling conditions tough, but as the day went on improved significantly.

Overall the route was definitely challenging, and it’s fair to say that it’s not for the faint – hearted, cyclists who participated can proudly say ‘Did Clare’s Coast Run, Challenging to say the least!!’

Starting in Clarecastle GAA Complex, cyclists headed for Killmer, via Ballynacally, Kildysarty, with a food stop Kilrush, whilst there were no major climbs, this stretch was testing, as cyclists commented,

‘Lots of Up’s and Down’s’,

‘Challenging, especially with the headwind towards Kilkee / Kilrush’,

‘Scenery something else’,

‘Has the makings of a classic tour’

‘Everything cyclists look for in a tour, this has it by the bucket full’.

After Kilrush everyone headed for Coolclare, here the Leisure group turned left for Kilmihill, Kilmaley, Ennis whilst the Sportive cyclists

Headed for Quilty, Lehinch, Ennistimon, Ennis, and finishing up in

Clarecastle.

A special mention to all who helped out on the day, in particular,

Paul Edson from West Clare CC, and Pat Gleeson, from All Ireland Wheelers.

After speaking with cyclists, Next years Clare’s Coast Run, will have a 9am start, date will be changed so that it’s not clashing with other sporting events in the region, other than that everyone agreed its perfect, well almost everyone!!!

Reason must exclude Jim!! If there’s every a character it’s him!!

Roll on North Kerry / West Limerick’s Coast Run Sat. 9th July

Currow’s Leisure Tour

Good turn out, excellent route, starting from community centre cyclists headed for Tralee, then up the 325 meter Gransha climb, Castlemaine (Food stop) from here the 60km group headed for Farranfore, whilst the 100km went to Miltown, Killorglin, Killarney, (another food stop) here the faster group headed off first, with everyone finishing up in Currow, good natured banter as per usual amongst cyclists, everything was organised down to a tee, its no wonder the club is held in such high esteem across cycling fraternity.

Carrick Wheelers

Bobby Power’s Vision Realised, a challenge that was beyond even the fittest of most cyclists, the ultimate Irish sportive.

The event coincided with the Clancy Festival – Bobby’s mother Peg being a Clancy herself. On the day, 130 cyclists signed on at 7.30am in Carrick. As was Bobby’s vision, only 75 made it back.

The overall distance, 100 miles, incorporating 8 challenges, TULLAHOUGHT, THE GAP OF RATHLARISH, SLIEVENAMON, TIGANCOR, THE NIRE VALLEY LOOP, SESKIN HILL, MAHON FALLS, and finally the most spectacular test of them all, a 3 mile stretch off road through the private grounds of Curraghmore Estate. For followers of professional cycling, think of the “strada bianca” of the Giro d’Italia crossed with cobbles of Paris Roubaix!! The final challenge, the ultimate test!!

Seasoned ‘Sportive’ participants from all over Ireland proclaimed the event as the best Irish event ever. With the roads and scenery of South Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford, how could the club go wrong?

Four riders from the Netherlands have already entered for 2012. Clearly, Bobby Power has pointed the way to promote Carrick, cycling and tourism into the future.

· A tweet worth mentioning, ‘great day at the inaugrual Bobby Power Carrick wheelers challenge. Oh my god what a bloody challenge it was too! Well done to all involved’

In true sportsmanship, and in honour of their former captin, the club renamed the event Bobby Power’s Carrick Wheelers Challenge Sportive.
