All recovered we ploughed onto the top of Strikes and dropped back down into Clashmore where we meet the locals saying a prayer for all those who completed the climb. Rolling on, we passed under the flyover and onto Youghal where we completed the spin by tackling the bypass and a loop around the beach. 105km competed for 12.15pm.

The 10 O’Clock group also hit the road when a group of 8 left Youghal to complete a loop of the East Cork coast. Down the Bog road the headed for Ballymacoda after which the climbed the coastline hills to Garryvoe before cruising onto Cloyne and Saleen. From there, the looped around East Ferry where they stopped for the coffee and the chat. Re-fueled, they headed back to Ballinacurra and Midleton. When the home stretch ahead of them the turned off at the Two Mile Inn and rode onto Mogeely and Killeagh where they came back onto the main road for Youghal where they arrived at 1.30pm with a testing 70km completed.

And just before you thought you were getting away with It Tony, you and your better half have been well spotted out doing the Sneaky training which obviously it standing to you based on the way you climbed Hells Borreen. You had better keep it up cause the rest of us are hot on you wheel.

YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 1st August 2010

Walk The Line – Sunday 1st August 2010

The Kelly training re-summed last Sunday when a group of 10 gathered at 8.00am at Moby Dick’s car park for our weekly Sunday spin. The chosen plan for the day was to get in some good climbing in the legs in preparation for the Kelly Tour at the end of the month. We headed on out the Tallow road at a brisk pace and dropped down into Tallow with the usual fellow on the front. From there, we climbed out of Tallow and rolled onto Lismore before the fellow with the bladder problem had to stop with a mechanical problem that could not be fixed. He duly called the Taxi and we left him there to ponder he thoughts. On we rolled through Lismore before hanging a left for the Vee. All going well, Wayne decided to freshen it up a little by taking a little detour at the stone bridge. There began the huffing and puffing as we tackled the bump in then road that lay before us. Eventually when we got over that, we dropped back down again onto the usual climb up the Vee which was very welcome after that last blip. We reached the top of the Vee and turned for Mellary before dropping down into Cappoquin for the Coffee and Jaffa Cakes. Refreshed we headed back the Dungarvan road where Eoin and Brian had a little surprise planned for the lads!!. I knew well what lay ahead as I sang Johnny Cash’s ‘I Walk The Line’ Arriving just after West Waterford Golf Club, we hung a right. All were getting worried about what lay ahead as they watched Eoin and Brian put their glasses into their pocket. Then, Bang, there is was, the Borreen from Hell, A wall of a road that just kept going and going around every bend. The only way to describe the climb was to compare it to Windmill Hill in town except it was only 8 ft wide, 2.5km long with an average gradient of 20%. One by one we arrived at the top where an extended break was welcomed by all and where we voted on kicking Eoin and Brain out of the club for bringing such pain and suffering on all who conquered the climb which we christened ‘Hells Borreen’.
