YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 04th September 2011

WET, WET, WET – Sunday 04th September 2011

The group got a right soaking last Sunday when 8 club members gathered for the weekly Sunday spin. With the wind a howling and the rain falling horizontal, we departed Moby Dicks at 8.00am and headed for the East coast of Cork. As usual, down the bog road to Ballymacoda and Garryvoe, from there onto Shanagarry and Ballycotton before hugging the coast through Churchtown South and Trabolgan and finally resting up from that tough headwind at Whitegate. The tea and coffee were well earned at this stage but there was no hanging around as we struck off for Ballinacurra and Midleton before taking the main road home to Youghal via Castlemartyr and Killeagh. Our 80km spin through torrential rain was completed at 11.00am. A good hard workout for the hardy boys of Youghal C.C. Poxy Kenneally though picked a good weekend to take off and he is going to know all about it next Saturday at the Rebel Tour !!

2011 An POST Rebel Cork Tour – Saturday 10th September 2011

A large group men and women from Youghal C.C. will be heading headed to CIT in Cork this weekend for our final Sportive of the year. The route will again be heading out of the city through the Wilton and Bandon Road roundabouts. Along the N71 road into West Cork through Halfway, right toward Crossbarry on the R589 on to Bandon, bypassing the town and proceeding on the R586 through Enniskean and Ballineen and onto Dunmanway toward Clonakilty. From their we will continue on the R600 through Timoleague, Kilbrittan and Ballinspittle along the coast of Garretstown and the Old Head before coming back in through scenic Kinsale. The route will then join back up on the N71 at Halfway and head back for the City via the Viaduct, and onto Bandon Road roundabout where the cyclists will be directed toward the finishing point at CIT. We had a great spin at this event last year and look forward to covering the 150km circuit again this year. Pity there are no decent hills on the parcours for Tobin to burn us all, in particular Gregg, who won’t be having the pasta at the food stop this time !!

Cycling for the Local Charities, Team Youghal gear up for 1,350 mile Race Around Ireland.

Team Youghal will create history on Sept 11th when they will compete in the 1,350 mile Race Around Ireland Cycle Race for the third successive year. This year the team will be raising funds for two local charities, Youghal Hospice and Youghal Meals on Wheels.

Only ten weeks after completing the 3,005 mile Race Across America Team Youghal will compete in the toughest cycling endurance test in Europe covering a massive distance of 1,350 miles traveling through all four Irish Provinces with many steep climbs and sharp descents along the way. What makes this such a fantastic challenge is the constant flow of the race which runs 24 hours a day from start to finish, with little or no let up and that overwhelming desire not only to complete the race, but to win it!

Team Youghal’s’ winning time in the 2009 ‘Race Around Ireland’ was clocked at 90 hours and 6 minutes and they improved this by almost two hours last year in very poor weather conditions. The race route through Cork is incredible, entering the County in Glengarriff, heading on to Bantry, Goleen, Mizen Head, Skull, Ballydehob, Skibbereen, Leap, Rosscarbery, Clonakilty, Timoleague, Ballinspittle, Kinsale, Ballincollig, Kerry Pike, Blarney, Cork City (Including St Patrick’s Hill) Glanmire, Carrigtwohill, Midleton, Castlemartyr, Killeagh and on to Youghal, before heading to Dungarvan and on to Mahon Falls.

From all at the club, we wish the best of luck to all those involved and in particular the riders, Ger Flanagan, Christy McCarthy, Brain Hehir, Michael McCarthy, Tom Fitzgerald, Stephen McGovern, Paul Hayes and John Twomey.

Club Monthly Meeting

Our September Club Monthly Meeting will take place this Wednesday, the 7th, at the Holy Family Church, Youghal at 8.00pm. All club members are asked to attend with the Recent Vee Challenge and upcoming ‘My Sister Zoe Appeal’ charity cycle to be discussed. New members are as always welcome to attend.

Midweek Spins.

The midweek spins have now finished for the year due to the lack of light in the evenings. A few head the balls might still get out around 6.00pm for a 1.5hr spin but there may be only two weeks left in that as well.
