Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 3rd March 2013

Club Spins Well the winter training is all behind us at this stage. With that the groups are starting to get in a little more kilometres and a little more climbing! Saturday 23rd Feb saw the intermediate group head off on a 150km cycle that brought them from Youghal, out through Aglish and Ballymacarbary before rolling into Clonmel. From here they then headed back for Clogheen and up The Vee to Lismore, Tallow and back to Youghal via Killeagh. A great days cycling was had by all and suddenly all those steady winter miles are starting to reap rewards. A big thanks goes out to James who did support vehicle for the day. Routes were a little tamer last weekend as we reverted to the usual 80-100km circuits.

Racing Sunday 24th Feb was our first representation on the racing calendar this year. It was great to see a group of 5 riders – Eoin Whyte (A3), Brian Sanders (A3), Dave Heffernan (A4), Jason Collins (A4), Anthony Keneally (A4) and Wayne Fitzgerald (A4) don the Youghal colours and racing numbers for the day. The Lacey Cup is hosted by Tralee BC, it is a 75km circuit and is one of the most challenging in the racing calendar with two hard climbs included for good measure! As expected the pace was hot and all Club riders put in great rides with the highlights of the day being Eoin Whyte taking 15 place & Anthony Keneally putting on his racing strip for the first time in 21 years! Well done lads. We will have further updates as the racing season progresses.

Sportiffs Last weekend also saw the sportiff calendar kick off. First up was the Midleton Audax 200km cycle. On the peloton for this event were John Bulman, John Walsh, Mark O’Riordan, Ian & Tony Walsh, Jon Flynn & Gregg Hill. The route departed from Midleton and took in Tallow, Lismore and The Vee before rolling onto Clonmel. The return route brought them into Dungarvan and took the coast road via Ardmore to Youghal and again stuck to the coast to bring the group back to Midleton. Great to get in a long spin like that at this time of the year.
