Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 12h April 2012

Summer League It is with great pride I can report that Youghal Cycling Club held our first league race in 18 years this last week. We had a great mix of 24 cyclists assemble at Summerfield Cross to try their luck in the racing. In the interest in making the league competitive for all riders, we have handicapped the league to suit all rider capability, and ensure we have great competition. The league will be run over 10 weeks. There will be six road races, two hill climbs and two time trials. Week 1 saw us depart from Summerfield Cross and head straight out the main road, then taking a left down to Gortroo and back up the Redbarn Road. This loop was repeated four times with the finish line at the bird sanctuary car park after a total of 30km covered. After round 1 the standings are as follows:

Round 2 will cover the same route. Riders are asked to assemble at Summerfield Cross from 6:30pm on Thursday as racing starts at 7pm sharp. We would like to thank all that helped on the night. Without your help this will not be possible, please keep it up! We really need and appreciate it,

Racing This week our trio of racers, Eoin Whyte, Brian Sanders and Jason Collins headed to Carrick-On-Suir to compete in their road race. All three riders rode very well and kept with the main groups. Come the finish it was Eoin Whyte who was in the running and did well to finish in the Top 10 after is sprint finish. Well done lads!

Sportiffs Youghal Cycling Club had 18 cyclists head to Kilmallock for their annual 120km Hub Tour. Clear blue skies greeted all 235 cyclists that had signed on for this very popular event. We rolled out of Kilmallock shortly after 9am and headed on our merry way up to cover the 1250 meters vertical climbing on this challenging sportiff. We finished the event after 4 hours cycling at an average rolling speed of 30kph. Well done to newbies Tom Hickey & Ronan Coleman who were on their first Club sportiff. We would love to be able to tell ye that it gets easier lads, but it doesn’t!!

Club Spins Our regular Club spins also headed out over the weekend. The 9am group headed East this week and did a loop towards Ballynoe & Conna before heading to Rathcormac & Midleton. From here they hit the backroads to Youghal at Killeagh via Mogeely. They had 9 riders out that covered the 100km route at an average rolling speed of 28kph.

Meanwhile the 10am group also met at Moby Dicks and had a strong peloton of 12 riders assembled. This week they headed west to Ballamacoda, Ladysbridge and Kilcredan before stopping in Shanagarry for the cup of tea. The return leg brought them to Cloyne & Killeagh before rolling into town with a total of 55km covered at an average rolling speed of 20kph.
