The High Altitude Club Spin – 10th April

A fantastic sunny morning greated 20 members of Youghal C.C. last Sunday morning when we lined up at Moby Dicks for our weekly club spin. The first group of 12 gathered at 8.00am and departed not long after. The remaining 8 gathered and departed at 10.00am for their weekly spin. A further 2 members traveled to Carrigaline where they pinned on their racing numbers for the day. The rest were at home nursing bugs except for JF, who again put his feet up for the second week in a row to watch a cobbled classic.

The first group of 12 headed in the direction of County Waterford and in particular Dungarvan which involved the long and steady accent up to Kiely’s Cross followed by the smooth decent down into Dungarvan. From there we ascended up the Pike and rolled on to Lemybrien before turning left towards Carrick On Suir. Half way over however, we took a sharp left for this year’s biggest challenge, The Climb of Mahon Falls. For some it was a maiden voyage, a right of ascension into the Youghal Club, for one other, it was the concurring of those demons from last August. Hats off to Mark, Pat, Kieran, Ross & Greg for completing their toughest challenge to date and Bravo to Healy who stood at the top and watched everyone else follow him up. Anyway, enough of that waffle, the group all safely tacked the tricky decent and rolled onto Ma Ma’s, another leg buster, but steady climb. The group climbed all together before looping up down and around onto the Clonmel Road where we stopped for a well earned Hot Bru at Barry’s Shop. Fully refreshed, we dropped down fast into Dungarvan and took the scenic route back to Youghal via Helvick, Ring, Grange and Ardmore. We all arrived safely home to Youghal for 1.45pm with a very hilly 125km parcours completed. Well done to all, a good form tester completed for this years up coming sportive.

The second group of 8 also gathered at Moby Dicks last Sunday morning at 10.00am for their weekly run. They covered a sheltered route around East Cork taking in Ballymacoda, Ladysbridge, and Castlemartyr for the coffee stop, Killeagh and back to Youghal for 12.45pm with a challenging 40km loop completed.

Ladies Spin

The female side to the club got the pedals turning again last Saturday when a group of three gathered at Moby Dicks for their weekly spin. Departing at 9.00am, they took the main road to Killeagh and back and Castlemartyr where they braked for a coffee. The returned to Youghal again via Killeagh, completing a 25km spin. Keep it up Girls !! and more of the same next week.

Edge Sports Shop Classic, Minane Bridge, Carrigaline, Co. Cork.

The club was again well represented on the racing circuit last Sunday in Carrigaline, Co. Cork when The Edge C.C. held their annual Edge Classic. The organisation had three events listed on the line -A1&2, 100kms (no handicap); A3, 80kms and A4 50kms. On the day Eoin Whyte lined up alongside 80 odd other riders for the A3 Race with James O’ Mahoney lining up in the A4 Race with another group of around 50. Eoin was on the attack from the off, on the very lumpy circuit, and instigated all of the days major breaks, but again none of them stuck with the dwindling bunch closing down all the moves. The bunch however had been significantly reduced due to the continues attacks by Eoin to a point where there was only a group of 30 left to contest the final sprint with Eoin taking the line in sixth position. A solid ride again Eoin and a good tester for the form. James also gave it a lash in the A4 race and rode solid all day on the very lumpy course. A break did however get away in this race to contest the prizes with the peleton, containing James, rolling in shortly after. Another solid ride again for James, who is racing in his first season. Keep it up lad as the racing circuit is the best training for you and it will only be a matter of time before it bears some fruit.

Club Monthly Meeting

Our fourth Club Monthly Meeting took place last Wednesday, the 5th of April, at the Holy Family Church, Youghal at 8.00pm. Again there was a large turnout to discuss a number of club related items, namely, the Mizen to Malin head cycle, this years Vee Challenge, Club Membership, Club Kit, the midweek spins and the up coming sportive that the club will be attending. Again a good debate took place on all the items with members who were participating in the Mizen to Malin head cycle urged to keep up the training.

Kilmallock CC Club Tour

Kilmallock CC will be holding their annual club tour this Sunday the 17th April. A good group traveled to their maiden event last year and really enjoyed the spin and in particular, the pig on the spit, afterwards. A number of club members have confirmed that will be again traveling to the event this year. This will be our first official trip of the season so anyone looking to travel should contact the secretary for details.

Midweek Spins.

Midweek spins have now commenced and take place every Tuesday and Thursday evenings with a 7.00pm SHARP depart time. These spins usually take between 1.5hrs and 2 hrs to complete and are run off at a very high tempo to bring on everyone’s top end speed and get the heart rate pumping. A second group will shortly be organized to roll off at the same time every Tuesday and Thursday, but at a much more comfortable pace, so watch this space for details 1.

Weekend Spins.

As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 8.00 am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate and covers on average of between 100 to 130km. A second group also departs at 8.00am for a 4 - 5 hour spin, and covers a 100 to 120km distance. A third group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes around 3 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 to 40km. The pace is again very comfortable. This is an ideal group for anyone interested in taking up the sport. The Ladies group has also now kicked off for the year with a weekly spin departing from Moby Dicks every Saturday at 9.00am. New members or visitors to the area are always welcome to any of the groups. If you have any questions about the club or attending one of our weekend spins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at 086-8563292 for details. Until next week, safe cycling!
