Youghal Cycling Club Notes – Sunday 30th September 2012

Club Spins Note that all official club spins are scheduled to leave from Moby Dicks per the schedule at the bottom of the report. With all the sportiffs complete for the season we are now back to winter training – the heavy miles and speeds have been brought back. If there are any people who have taken up cycling over the summer months and are interested in taking up club cycling, then you are encouraged to come out with us now and get the winter training in for next year.

Duathlon The joint duathlon between Youghal Cycling Club and Youghal Athletic Club was held last Sunday, 30th September. The format of the event was a 5km run leading to a 20km cycle, followed by a 5km run to finish. The teams were mixed up to keep them balanced and have an exciting competition. On a desperately wet Sunday morning we were delighted to have 15 cyclists and 18 runners turn up to challenge themselves, and the weather!! In fact we all got so wet we may as well had the full triathlon! Sprightly on 12pm the runners headed off on their lap from Summerfield, up the new line, down Boreen Nora then returning to Summerfield. From here the cyclists took over and also went up the new line, down the bypass to Killeagh before turning back to Summerfield where the cyclists reversed their original run. Due to the handicapping system is was great to see runners and cyclists of varying ability still compete throughout the competition to try and be first over the line. In the end the strength of the runners came through and it was the duo of John Treacy (YCC) and Noel Curtin (YAC) that crossed the line first. Shortly afterwards it was Cormac Galvin (YCC) and Mossie Cahill (YAC) taking the silver, with Kieran Bennett (YCC) and Brian Landers (YAC) taking the bronze. Feedback from all involved was that it was a very enjoyable event and they are looking forward to the next one. We would like to thank the organising committee of Richella Devereaux (YAC), Maria O’Connor (YAC), Brian Sanders (YCC) and Wayne Fitzgerald (YCC) for organising the event. We would also like to thank Tri ‘N Run for their kind sponsorship of post race refreshments, Farrells Bar Summerfield for the use of their facilities and the local Gardai for assistance with traffic management at Killeagh. We would also like to thank the marshals, photographers and supporters that came out in the terrible weather to manage the junctions and of course all 33 competitors that turned up for the event. It is great to report that we raised E330 for local charity St Vincent De Paul.
