YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 15th MAY 2011

The Weekend Spins 15th May 2011

Lots and Lots of miles were covered by Youghal C.C. weekend in preparation for the ever closing Mizen To Malin Head challenge. There were groups on the road Saturday morning and afternoon, various groups on the road Sunday morning as well as a quartet of speed freaks racing in Whitechurch. A busy weekend was had by all.

On Saturday morning a group of 11 covered a nice loop to Knockanore, Tallow, Conna, Rathcormac, Lisgould, Midleton, Mogeely, Killeagh, Gortroe and finally back to Youghal with a 100km route completed. On Saturday Afternoon, a pair of saddle soars rode to Cork and tackled Patrick’s hill on route to meeting Donnacha Cuttriss for his charity ride. Once completed, they rode home again to Youghal.

On Sunday morning the 8.00am group headed West to Ballymacoda, Ring, Garryvoe, Ballycotton, Trabolgan and Aghada for the coffee where Eoin M had his usual puncture to repair without a working pump and no spare tube !. Healy’s words summed it up while we waited for the repair! Nice One Eoin, if anything your consistent !! After a run in with a local in a public walkway, we casually departed and rode onto Saleen, looped around East Ferry, Midleton, Castlemartyr, Killeagh, Mount Uniacke, Half way Bar and flat to the mat to Youghal followed by a small trip over the bypass. Another good 110km spin in the legs.

The second group of 6 also gathered at Moby Dicks last Sunday morning at 10.00am for their weekly run. They covered a club favorite sheltered route around East Cork taking in Ballymacoda, Ladysbridge, and Castlemartyr for the coffee stop, Killeagh and back to Youghal for 12.45pm with a challenging 40km loop completed.

Jim O'Leary memorial & Ken O'Keeffe memorial race, Whitechurch, Co. Cork.

The race numbers were again pinned on last weekend when a team of four headed to Whitechurch, Co. Cork to take part in the two races of the day. The main race of the day was the Jim O'Leary memorial race for the A2/A3 categories. They will race over 7 laps of the demanding 10km circuit with a long drag each lap. Brian Sanders and Eoin Whyte represented the club well during this race with Eoin making the break of the day before finally attacking that group in the last Km. He was quickly joined by two others and crossed the line for third place behind his breakaway companions, who are both, I might add, riding the RAS at the end of May. Brian also got away from the main field in a larger group which came in just 30 seconds down on Eoin's group with Brian sprinting over near the head of this group. Great result for Eoin and a great come back race for Brain who had recently been out Injured.

Racing in the A4's was Team O’ Mahoney who battled it out over 5 laps of the Whitechurch circuit in the Ken O'Keeffe memorial race. Mick who was making his racing depute, had a great ride and by all accounts looked very strong on the climb of each lap and only for a problem over a “right of way” between his front wheel, his spokes and someone else rear derailleur, he may have taken a good placing. James of course was again consistent with his strong ride within the peleton and was never to be seen too far from the front. Strong racing by both father and son who both crossed the line within the main bunch.
