YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 21st FEBRUARY 2010

The Weekly Spin – Sunday 21st February.

What a start we had last Sunday morning when a group of 10 riders gathered at Moby Dicks at 9.00am, A freezing fog surrounded the entire town and those that cycled down to our meeting point arrived with ice after forming on the gloves. With this extreme cold we didn’t hang about at Moby Dicks, we quickly headed on out the main road to Killeagh and were glad to see the sun breaking through by the time we reached the bog road. With all this frost around we decided to cycle it safe by sticking to the main road and so continued out to Killeagh. By the time we reached Killeagh, whose roads resembled the roads you would find at the Ardennes Classic races in Belgium, we were all well warmed up. We continued on through Castlemartyr and the Midleton Bypass where we kept a brisk pace until we reached Cobh Cross. At this point it must be said that a couple of the lads got a bit excited at the prospect of the scheduled coffee stop in Carrigtwohill and duly took off in the big ring. By the time they reached Centra in Carrigtwohill the rest had caught up and we still managed to get the first cup of coffee. Warmly refueled, we traveled back the main road again at a stronger pace through the Midleton Bypass, Castlemartyr and Killeagh before the real fun started up the leg breaking Youghal Bypass. Their was no one complaining of the cold by the time they got to the top of the Bypass as all were strung out and dripping in sweat. We all arrived back in Youghal for around 12.00pm with another 70km in the legs. A great spin was had by all.

The 10 O’ Clock group consisting of 4 riders also gathered on the freezing morning and traveled out the main road towards Dungarvan before turning down at Grange Church and into Ardmore where they refueled. For the return leg they traveled back the coast road to Piltown and back into Youghal where they arrived at around 12.30pm with 30km completed. Another great spin for those who participated.

Best Of Luck

Best of luck to Club Man and Club Sponsor John Welsh who is due to get married next week. We wondered why he has been getting in so many Miles on the bike since the start of the new year and now we know. Once the Big Ring goes on John and you return from the Honeymoon, that will be the end of the bike for you for some time. Further proof of this was seen by this scribe when I witnessed from a distance a visibly upset John trying to sell his bike to another club member after last Sundays spin. Don’t worry John; Once things get back to normal you might be able to get a new Bike if you ask nicely.Only kidding John, just a bit of fun for your lunchtime.Best of luck from all at the club on your big day and we hope to see you back on the bike in the Summer.
