YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB NOTES 24th APRIL 2011

Kilmallock HUB Tour

Kilmallock CC held the first big organized tour of the year last Sunday the 17th April and a group of eight members from Youghal CC traveled up to participate. A mass start of over 200 riders commenced at around 9.30 with a mountainous route of 120km to be completed.

The Hub Challenge, as it was called, left from the Library in Kilmallock and headed straight for Ardpatrick, beyond ArdPatrick the route turned right and into the first climb of the day up through Glenenaar passing the Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails on the right hand side, over the top of the mountain and down into Co. Cork, the route then turned right and headed towards the main Kildorrery to Ardpatrick Road over the second climb of the day, this one being more gentle than the first. Left on the main Kildorrery road and then right for the village of Ballyorgan, a tester of a climb through the village and then straight to Kilfinane, right in Kilfinane heading for Ballylanders and into Ballintubber, the fourth climb of the day, a long decent then into ballylanders where the route will cross the main Mitchelstown road and head for Galbally, the route turned right in Galbally and headed through the Glen of Aherlow, crossing into Tipperary with the Galtee mountains on your right hand side, in the village of Aherlow the route turned right and up over the last climb of the day, Christ the King, A fast decent heading towards Tipperary town before turning left to avoid the main part of the town and onto the main Tipperary Galbally road, further down this road the route will turn right for the village of Lattin for the food stop. Once refueled we headed to Emily and then on through Knocklong Village where we turned right for Hospital Town, Left in Hospital and onto Knockainey village and on to Holycross. The route then turned left in Holycross for the town of Bruff, straight through Bruff and along the final stretch back to Kilmallock, where we were greated with some fantastic refreshments and some finely roasted pig for all the participants. A great day on the bike and a great start to the sportive season.

The Easter Spin Frenzy – 24th April

With the Mizen to Malin head cycle quickly approaching, many of the club members participating in this event used the Bank Holiday weekend well to get in three good consecutive spins in between Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

On the Saturday morning, a number of club members tagged onto the Team Youghal Training Express which took a scenic route to Kinsale and back Via Cobh covering a challenging 140km. On the Saturday afternoon, another group also took on a challenging 140km loop around East Cork and West Waterford.

Easter Sunday saw a number of members taking the morning off to look for Easter Eggs but the die hard's were there again at 8.00am for a spin up to Tallow, Lismore, Cappoquin, over the Vee to Clogheen and Newcastle before returning back through Ballymacarbry, Aglish, Clashmore and the usual bust up the bypass to finish with 135km in the legs. Some of those who were on the Easter Egg hunt that morning did manage to get out before lunch and took in a handy 70km loop around East Cork.

On the Monday, another group was somehow aloud out and another 120km spin was taken on around West Waterford and East Cork for those head the balls.

The Sunday morning 10.00am group also hit the roads in the good weather for their weekly run. They covered a sheltered route up the main Waterford road to the Shanachie before turning left and dropping like stones down into Clashmore for the coffee break. From there, they rode back through Piltown and home the main road to Youghal for 12.30pm with a nice 50km completed.

All in all, a lot of KM were covered over the Easter Weekend and again some very valuable training was put in for the fastly approaching Mizen To Malin Head challenge.

Ladies Spin

The female side to the club continued to turn the pedals for the club when last Saturday a group of three gathered at Moby Dicks for their weekly spin and their ongoing training for the 100km Midleton Tour De Cure. Departing at 9.00am, they took the main road to Killeagh and back and Castlemartyr where they braked for a coffee. The returned to Youghal again via Killeagh, completing a 25km spin. Keep it up Girls !! and more of the same next week.

Things we have seen and heard!

With no racing on over the weekend a little bird told us that the bright spark of the club racing team headed to the track in Manchester for a couple of quick laps over the weekend, Nice one Eoin, I hope the natives were very accommodating !!. Fabian, aka “Healy” was again spotted altitude training up Mahon Falls; forget about in John, sometimes you have to just move on!

Midweek Spins.

Midweek spins have now commenced and take place every Tuesday and Thursday evenings with a 7.00pm SHARP depart time. These spins usually take between 1.5hrs and 2 hrs to complete and are run off at a very high tempo to bring on everyone’s top end speed and get the heart rate pumping. A second group will shortly be organized to roll off at the same time every Tuesday and Thursday, but at a much more comfortable pace, so watch this space for details 1.
